One of the biggest harms for problematic gamblers is the toll it takes on their mental health.
Today we discuss how a punter can be a successful gambler, while maintaining a positive mindset.
Stakes planning
This is the most important place to begin. Almost all people that found gambling affecting them mentally have not had a plan in place, and rather chase each win, deciding each stake spontaneously.
We always plan our staking in advance (minimum one week at a time, but the longer the better). We ask ourselves – “What is my gambling budget that I don’t need at all in this timeframe”?
Once we know this, we suggest a plan for the client accordingly.
We emphasise the best/worst case scenario, and the probability of each, to ensure the client is comfortable with this.

Alongside getting expected profit from each bet, this is the most important aspect of our gambling.
If you put all of your eggs in one basket, this means a lot to you and will likely heavily affect your mood.
When we diversify to several smaller stake value bets, we can relax in the knowledge that there are so many events that our mathematical edge will come out on top.
Some of our clients place over 10,000 valuable bets per year, so they are far less affected by one or two bad results.

Note your winners
It is part of the human psychology to dwell on something that we almost achieved but didn’t, more than something we did achieve.
Gamblers tend to do this more than most.
Have you ever checked the results of your multi, and see only 1 leg failed? Immediately you probably checked how close it came to winning, and feel “unlucky” and hard done by.
You probably didn’t bother checking all of the winning legs that may have been “lucky” winners!
Whenever I have a big winner, I take a screenshot of the betslip (you can see some on our Instagram).
Then if I have a close loser, I will look through all of the winners I had that were also close, and remind myself that it all balances out, and our mathematical edge keeps us in profit in the long run.
Sometimes I’ll even rewatch the highlights of a previous winning selection to remind myself I’m not “unlucky”!

Educate yourself
The bookmaker tries to use our psychology against us, encouraging us to increase our volume of bets, and bet on extremely bad value bets.
A recent example of this is the “Same Game Multi”, which punters lose over 50% of their bankroll to on average (unless they follow our strategy).
Once a gambler is educated, they will likely never justify placing a needless bet that gives value back to the bookmaker, and be content in the knowledge that their betting system will always beat the bookie in the long run.

Social gambling
As mentioned in our social gambling post , betting with friends/family helps us keep discipline and stay on track.
It also acts as a support system, and it’s better to have people to share the experiences with!
Help with all of the above steps is included in our service.
